Heart-attack in the under 30s

The collapse of Bolton Wanderers star Fabrice Muamba has shocked the world and highlighted the risk of heart attack in the under-30s.

The underlying causes, including irregular heartbeats or disease of the heart muscle are inherited genetic abnormalities. The question is whether sport is leading to these conditions causing cardiac arrest?

Research suggests that playing sport at a high level can increase the risk of cardiac arrest. Dr Leonard Shapiro, a consultant cardiologist and advisor to the Football Association says “There is a predisposition in some individuals to have a cardiac event under very high physical and emotional stress."
