World longest donor chain in US!

22 February 2012

The chain consisted of people who wanted to donate but who were not compatible with their own family. Instead, a suitable stranger was found.

The chain started with Rick Ruzzamenti, who decided to donate his kidney to a stranger. The whole process then lasted 4 months, involved 17 hospitals and crossed 11 states.

The final donor in the chain was a 59 year old Californian woman whose kidney was donated to Don Terry of Illinois. Mr Terry is a type 2 diabetic and was at risk of dying from renal failure. Unfortunately Mr Terry’s family could not continue the chain. However Mr Terry has said “I have made it my life’s mission to make people aware of Kidney chains.”
